Ryan Smith, CFA, joined HealthEco in April 2021 as a senior investment associate. Ryan brings more than 11 years of financial industry and seven years of investing experience within the global health care sector. In his current role, Ryan works closely with the managing partners on advising the formulation of investment theses and supporting the end-to-end process of evaluating portfolio transactions.
Prior to joining HealthEco, Ryan held various positions over nine years at Janus Henderson Investors, an asset manager based in Denver, CO. For seven out of the nine years, Ryan held positions on the equity investment team, most recently as an equity analyst focused on the global healthcare sector. Ryan was responsible for idea generation and stock coverage supporting multiple fund strategies across the organization with aggregate AUM of ~$224 billion prior to his departure. As a member of the healthcare team, he worked closely on supporting the Global Life Sciences Fund, a healthcare dedicated strategy that had grown to ~$14 billion AUM prior to his departure. The Global Life Sciences strategy was flexible, allowing Ryan to perform and consider investments from across the globe within both the private and public sectors. Within healthcare, Ryan mainly focused on the therapeutics and life science & tools subsectors across the U.S., Japan, and China regions. In addition to supporting the existing strategies across Janus, Ryan contributed to the formation and launch of a dedicated biotechnology hedge fund strategy in late 2018. In just over two years post launch, total AUM across the hedge fund strategy surpassed $200M. Prior to working as an analyst and associate on the investment team at Janus, Ryan held financial analyst and accounting roles at both Janus and Aurora Bank (a subsidiary of Lehman Brothers).
Ryan received his Bachelor of Science degree in finance from Miami University and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
